New mission presidents

The First Presidency has announced the call of eight more mission presidents. The new presidents and their wives will be assigned to specific missions later and will begin their service about July 1. Those called are:

Alton M. Alexander, Jr., 62, Olympia 3rd Ward, Olympia Washington Stake; branch president, former stake president and counselor, high councilor, stake missionary, bishop and counselor, branch president, and temple ordinance worker; served in Spanish American Mission, 1951-53; district manager of insurance company; earned bachelor's degree from Idaho State University; born in Twin Falls, Idaho, a son of Alton M. and Rula Morgan Alexander; married DeNiece J. Pieper, branch librarian, former stake Relief Society secretary, stake Scouting director, ward Relief Society president and counselor, Young Women president, Primary president and chorister, ward music chairman, and temple ordinance worker; born in Pocatello, Idaho, a daughter of Frederick William and Bertha Clara Meyers Pieper.Thomas E. Coburn, 40, Tobalaba Ward, Chile Santiago Las Condes Stake; mission president's counselor, former high councilor, stake seventies president, ward executive secretary, ward mission leader, Sunday School president, high priests group leader, and priests quorum adviser; served in Colombia Mission, 1972-74; regional manager for temporal affairs for the Church in Chile; earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Utah; born at Tachikawa Air Force Base, Japan, a son of Welton Woodland and Sheila Mary Ellinger Coburn; married Ana Maria Diaz, four children. She is a ward Primary president, former ward Relief Society president, counselor and teacher, ward activities chairman, Primary president's counselor, Young Adult co-chairman, and seminary teacher; served in Colombia Mission, 1972-73; attended BYU; born in Santiago, Chile, a daughter of Otto Ricardo and Ana Luisa Bozo Diaz.

M. Dale Ensign, 65, Arlington Hills Ward, Salt Lake Emigration Stake; high priests group leader, former mission president's counselor, regional representative, Washington advisory public communications committee member, stake president and counselor, high councilor, temple ordinance worker, and bishop's counselor; served in Swedish mission, 1947-50; executive vice president of oil company; attended Colorado College and earned juris doctorate from the University of Utah; born in Stockton, Calif., a son of Milton Wright and Mona Larson Ensign; married Elaine Woodbury, 10 children. She is a member as well as compassionate service leader of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, stake Relief Society board member, stake Primary board member, ward Relief Society president's counselor and teacher, Young Women president, Primary president's counselor, teacher, and chorister; attended the University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of George Lambert and Susannah Louise Capson Woodbury.

Paul G. Grant, 56, Jackson 3rd Ward, Driggs Idaho Stake; Sunday School president's counselor, former stake seventies president, stake missionary, high councilor, bishop's counselor, deacon quorum adviser, high priests quorum adviser, and Scoutmaster; served in South Australian Mission, 1956-58; retired circuit judge; earned juris doctorate from the University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a son of David Lewis and Mary Lucile Greenwood Grant; married Bonnie Lou Davis, 12 children. She is a Relief Society president's counselor, former stake Young Women president's counselor, Relief Society luncheon coordinator, and Primary teacher; attended BYU; born in Independence, Mo., a daughter of Elbert Halston and Mary Elizebeth Dick Cluny Davis.

George E. Lyman, 63, Arlington Hills Ward, Salt Lake Emigration Stake; Sunday School president's counselor, former adult correlation review chairman, high councilor, stake Sunday School president, bishop, and high priests group leader; served in Mexican Mission 1949-52; vice president and attorney for retirement systems company; attended Ricks College, the University of Utah, and earned juris doctorate from Colorado University College of Law; born in Oak City, Utah, a son of Willis Jay and Angie Finlinson Lyman. After his first wife, Helen Mar Strong Lyman, mother of seven died, he married Carolyn Butler Ostler, widow of Steven V. Ostler and mother of two children; one child has been born to them. She is a Relief Society pianist, former stake auditor, Relief Society president's counselor, teacher, and pianist, Sunday School teacher and pianist, Primary teacher and pianist, assistant ward librarian, and ward organist; president and certified public accountant for retirement systems management company; earned bachelor's degree from the University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of John Royal and Darlene Cowan Butler.

Ralph B. Maw, 56, Felicita Ward, Escondido California Stake; stake president's counselor, former stake president's counselor, stake executive secretary, stake athletic director, high councilor, temple ordinance worker, bishop, and high priests group leader and assistant; oral and maxillofacial surgeon; earned dental degree from Northwestern Dental School; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a son of Herbert Brown and Florence Hermina Buehler Maw; married Marilynn Jones, six children. She is a stake Relief Society president, former ward Relief Society president and counselor, Young Women president, Primary president and chorister, and ward choir director; attended BYU; born in Alhambra, Calif., a daughter of Emron Higbee and Jennie Cox Jones.

Gerald G. "Chip" Smith, Jr., 52, Monument Park 17th Ward, Salt Lake Monument Park North Stake; stake Young Men president's counselor and Sunday School teacher, former high councilor, bishop and counselor, Young Men president, elders quorum president, and high priests group leader; served in South Africa Mission, 1961-63; buyer for department store; attended the University of Utah; born in Washington, D.C., a son of Gerald Gay and Olive Rose Lunt Smith; married Carol Marie Ronnow, six children. She is a Young Women president's counselor, former stake activities co-chairperson, stake Primary president's counselor, ward Primary president's counselor and teacher, Young Women president's counselor and teacher, Sunday School teacher, Nursery coordinator, and Scout leader; attended the University of Arizona and earned bachelor's degree from BYU; born in Las Vegas, Nev., a daughter of F. Lorin and Myrtle Marie Carman Ronnow.

Frederick H. Stringham, 66, Oak Hills Ward, Bountiful Utah Central Stake; bishop's counselor, former stake Sunday School president and counselor, high councilor, bishop and counselor, Young Men president, and Scout Committee chairman; vice chairman of bank; earned bachelor's degree from the University of Utah and certificate from Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University; born in Bountiful, Utah, a son of Richard Haven and Natolia Bollwinkel Stringham; married Allie Jeanene Moss, six children. She is a former Young Women General Board member, stake Primary president, stake Young Women secretary, ward Relief Society president and homemaking leader, Young Women president's counselor, Sunday School secretary and teacher, Primary president, counselor and teacher; attended the University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of Carl Evan "Bill" and Jetta Holbrook Moss.
