Many Church members cannot read God's word. . . . The Gospel Literacy effort is an ongoing plan to help individuals learn to read and write so they can better understand the gospel and participate in all aspects of gospel living. As members learn to read the scriptures, they can more fully learn the doctrines of the Church and better teach the gospel, do family history projects, and serve in Church callings. They will also be strengthened in their homes, schools, and communities.
The purpose of the Gospel Literacy effort is two-fold: 1. To teach basic literacy skills for those who cannot read or write. 2. To encourage Church members to study the gospel and improve themselves and their famlies throughout their lives.- Gospel Literacy Guidelines for Priesthood
