BSA's Silver Buffalo is presented to former Seventy

Elder George R. Hill III, honorably released Oct. 3, 1992, after serving five years as a member of the Seventy, recently received the Silver Buffalo Award from the National Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Elder Hill was one of six Silver Buffalo recipients honored in St. Louis during the BSA annual national meeting.The Silver Buffalo Award, created in 1925, is the highest award given to Boy Scout volunteers by the national council. The award is bestowed upon those who have given service beyond their regular volunteer duties with the BSA. Previous LDS recipients include President Ezra Taft Benson and President Thomas S. Monson, second counselor in the First Presidency.

While a General Authority, Elder Hill served in the Philippines/Micronesia and Utah South area presidencies. At the time of his call, he was a professor of chemical and fuels engineering at the University of Utah. Prior to that he was an award-winning scientist noted for his work with coal, and was director of the U.S. Government Office of Coal Research and former dean of the College of Mines and Mineral Resources at the university.

In Scouting, Elder Hill began his long service as a troop and post committee chairman from 1955 to 1960. He also served on the Great Salt Lake Council and Region XII executive boards, on the National BSA Council and in other capacities. He has previously received both the BSA Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Awards.
