A thought from the scriptures

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. - Proverbs 23:22

"We encourage families to give their elderly parents and grandparents the love, care and attention they deserve," said President Ezra Taft Benson in the October 1989 general conference. "Let us remember the scriptural command that we must care for those of our own house lest we be found `worse than than an infidel. . . .'"Remember parents and grandparents are our responsibility, and we are to care of them to the very best of our ability. When the elderly have no family to care for them, priesthood and Relief Society leaders should make ever effort to meet their needs in the same loving way. . . ."

"Even when parents become elderly, we ought to honor them by allowing them freedom of choice and the opportunity for independence as long as possible."
