Effective Jan. 1, 1994, the opening exerises of Sunday School, including the hymn practice, will no longer be held, the First Presidency has announced.
In a letter to General Authorities; regional representatives; stake, mission and district presidents; bishops; and branch presidents, the First Presidency announced a change in the Sunday meeting schedule "in the spirit of simplification and with a continuing desire to strengthen all Church members."The text of the First Presidency letter is printed at the right. Below shows the two Sunday meeting schedules now approved.

"In the spirit of simplification and with a continuing desire to strengthen all Church members, we announce a change in the Sunday meeting schedule effective January 1, 1994.
"Opening exercises for Sunday School, including the hymn practice, will no longer be held. An opening prayer will be offered in each class.
"The schedule in which Sunday School is held first has been eliminated. Only two Sunday meeting schedules are approved.
"We reemphasize the importance of the Sunday School for teaching and learning the gospel through the study of scriptures. All members are encouraged to attend their Sunday School classes each Sunday.
"May the Lord bless you as you implement this adjustment in our Sunday meeting schedule."
