The standard works serve as the basic curriculum and class member manuals for all adults of the Church and are studied on a four-year cycle. The Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants and Church History are to be the major resources and the focus of all discussion. . . . The course is designed to have adult members become heavily involved in scripture reading and partake of the blessings that come from the study of the scriptures. President Kimball said, "The standard works have replaced all other materials as texts in the adult curriculum of the Church. . . . I feel strongly that we must all of us return to the scriptures . . . and let them work mightily within us, impelling us to an unwavering determination to serve the Lord" (Ensign, Sept. 1976, pp. 2, 5).
