Anticipation filled the air as conference-goers packed the Tabernacle on Temple Square for the solemn assembly session on Saturday morning. Rain clouds from the night before dissipated in the morning sun, warming those lined up outside.
President Thomas S. Monson conducted the session. President Gordon B. Hinckley conducted the conference business, which included the sustaining of President Howard W. Hunter for the first time as prophet and president of the Church.
Orange, red and yellow flowers adorning the Tabernacle podium seemed to reflect the warmth of the occasion as the Mormon Youth Chorus opened the session with the singing of "God of Our Fathers, Whose Almighty Hand." Robert C. Bowden directed; Bonnie L. Goodliffe accompanied.
Offering the invocation and benediction for the session were Elders F. Enzio Busche and C. Max Caldwell, respectively, of the Seventy.
