Elder Hartman Rector Jr., who was called as a General Authority 26 years ago in 1968, was given emeritus status as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy at the Saturday morning session.
Released at the session from the Second Quorum of the Seventy were Albert Choules Jr., Lloyd P. George, Malcolm S. Jeppsen, Richard P. Lindsay, Merlin R. Lybbert, Gerald E. Melchin and Horacio A. Tenorio. All were sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy when it was organized on April 1, 1989. Elders Choules, George, and Melchin also served six months in the First Quorum prior to the organization of the Second Quorum.Elder Rector was sustained to the First Council of the Seventy on April 6, 1968, at age 43. Among his callings as a General Authority, he was a counselor in the general Sunday School presidency, assistant executive director of the Church Family History Department and a member of the North America Central and South America North area presidencies. He joined the Church in 1952. He served in the Navy for 26 years as an aviator. He and his wife, Constance Kirk Daniel Rector, are the parents of nine children.
Elder Choules was a counselor in the Europe, Utah South, and Utah Central area presidencies. He and his first wife, Rosemary Phillips Choules who died in 1984, have three children. He married Marilyn Jeppson in 1987.
Elder George served as a counselor in the Utah Central, Pacific, North America Central and North America Southeast area presidencies. He and his wife, Leola Stott George, are parents of three children.
Elder Jeppsen served as president of the Utah South Area and as a counselor in the Utah North Area presidency. He and his wife, Marian Davis Jeppsen, are parents of five children and a foster child.
Elder Lindsay was president of the Africa Area and a counselor in the Utah North Area presidency. He and his wife, Marian Bangerter Lindsay, are parents of six children.
Elder Lybbert was general Sunday School president and Asia Area president. He was also a counselor in the North America Northwest and Asia area presidencies. He and his wife, Nola Cahoon Lybbert, are parents of six children.
Elder Melchin was a counselor in the North America Southwest, Europe North, United Kingdom/Ireland, Utah South and Utah North area presidencies. He and his wife, Evelyn Knowles Melchin, are parents of seven children.
Elder Tenorio was a counselor in the South America South, Mexico, and Mexico/Central America area presidencies. He and his wife, Maria Teresa de Tenorio, have three children.
