On the bright side

Last Christmas Eve found me immobile on the couch with the flu.

As a single parent with a little family I didn't expect much. However, I was given a most-precious gift from my 4-year-old son.Unbeknown to me, he had gone through my purse and wrapped my tube of lipstick and powder compact in tissue and placed them under the tree. Before opening his gifts, he gave me his offerings of love. A Christmas memory was made as he proved the phrase, "It's not the gift, but the thought that counts."

What joy filled my heart as I witnessed his thoughtful nature and spirit - a true blessing and gift. - Carla Muss, Beaverton, Ore.
