"I am mindful of you always in my prayers, continually praying unto God the Father in the name of his Holy Child, Jesus, that he, through his infinite goodness and grace, will keep you through the endurance of faith on his name to the end." - Moro. 8:3
In 1990, my husband and I were serving a mission in Texas. We had a large family and had never been away from them during the holiday season. I was a bit apprehensive and concerned about spending the approaching holidays with just the two of us.Our mission president had admonished us to be anxiously engaged in doing service or teaching the gospel instead of celebrating the holidays, and he promised us that we would not feel lonesome or homesick if we did that.
While studying the scriptures, I was touched by this passage from Moroni. When I wrote our weekly letter to our children, I asked them to read this scripture to their families during the holidays. I expressed our love and concern for them all, while we were so far away.
We received permission to cook a holiday dinner for a great-niece who lived in our mission. She had had surgery and was confined at home.
Then a dear sister in the ward invited us to her house for dinner in the evening. I offered to bring the pies. What fun I had preparing the meal for our niece and then baking enough pies for the later dinner.
It was a wonderful day. We were grateful to be able to serve our niece, and then to have dinner with this dear sister and her family, some of whom were not members. The promise our mission president had given us came true. We didn't feel lonesome or homesick, for we were about our Father's business. - Shirley Tyler, Walla Walla, Wash.
