Learning gospel principles is an individual and family responsibility that cannot be neglected or delegated to someone else. Individual class member scripture study is the foundation for gospel learning in Sunday School. Each member should study the scriptures prayerfully each week to prepare themselves to participate and learn in Sunday School.
Teachers should encourage class members to: 1. Study the scriptures to be discussed in class. 2. Use the cross-referenced footnotes, the Topical Guide, Bible Dictionary, and triple combination index. 3. Liken the scriptures unto themselves, their circumstances and challenges. 4. Select two or three passages, doctrines, or events from the assigned scriptures that impress them the most. 5. Mark the important passages in their scriptures. 6. Use their scriptures during class. 7. Participate in class.- Sunday School Handbook, p. 12
