New mission presidents

Six new mission presidents have been called by the First Presidency. They and their wives will begin their service about July 1. The new mission presidents and where they will serve are:

Boyd L. Cardon, 52, Costa Rica San Jose Mission; Rexburg 13th Ward, Rexburg Idaho Center Stake; stake Young Men president; former counselor in Mexico Guadaljara Mission presidency, high councilor, stake Young Men president, bishop and counselor, branch president, assistant ward clerk, high priests secretary, Young Men president, Scoutmaster, priests quorum adviser, and teachers quorum adviser; Ricks College math professor; received bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU; born in San Juan County, N.M., to Joseph Phillip and Anna Marie Rothlisberger Cardon; married Terri Le Horrocks, seven children. She is Relief Society homemaking counselor; former stake Laurel adviser, Relief Society teacher, Laurel adviser, and Primary teacher; received associate degree from Ricks College and attended BYU; born in Pocatello, Idaho, to Raymond J. and Ruth Elaine Camron Horrocks.Mervin L. Gifford, 57, Mexico Monterrey South Mission; Colorado Springs 6th Ward, Colorado Springs Colorado East Stake; counselor in stake presidency; former counselor in stake presidency, high councilor, bishop and counselor, high priests group leader, and Young Men president; Church Educational System coordinator/director of institute at Air Force Academy; received bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU; born in Springdale, Utah, to Othell and Margie Johnson Gifford; married Marjory Ward, seven children. She is Relief Society organist; former counselor in stake Young Women presidency, Relief Society president and teacher, ward organist, Primary and Sunday School organist; attended BYU; born in Preston, Idaho, to Platt D. Lyman and Wilma Marguerite Bawden Ward.

R. Clair Miles, 60, Oklahoma Tulsa Mission; Bitteroot Ward, Boise Idaho Central Stake; temple sealer and high priests group leader; former stake president and counselor, high councilor, bishop, elders quorum president, and Sunday School teacher; born in Preston, Idaho, to Royal Albert and Eva Taylor Miles; married Carol Harker, six children. She is former stake Relief Society president, Primary president, counselor in Young Women presidency and adviser, Relief Society teacher, Sunday School organist and chorister, Sunday School and Primary teacher; born in Shelley, Idaho, to Benjamin Ernest and Anna Elizabeth Pehrson Harker.

James R. Palmer, 60, Brazil Porto Alegre South Mission; Alpine 6th Ward, Alpine Utah Stake; inservice and Book of Mormon teacher; former high councilor, bishop, high priests group leader, counselor in branch presidency, servicemen's coordinator, and Sunday School teacher; director of administrative services at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah; received bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU; born in Tremonton, Utah, to Rudger Earnest and Letitia Ellen Wight Palmer; married Shirley Cloward, nine children. She is former counselor in stake Relief Society presidency, Relief Society president and counselor, Relief Society teacher, Young Women president and counselor, Primary president and counselor, Primary and Young Women teacher, attended BYU; born in Vernal, Utah, to Loran and Florence Gurr Cloward.

Steven E. Snow, 44, California San Fernando Mission; Washington 3rd Ward, Washington Utah Stake; president of St. George Utah College Stake; former high councilor, bishop, Scoutmaster, teachers quorum adviser, and Sunday School teacher; attorney; received bachelor's degree from Utah State University and law degree from BYU; born in St. George, Utah, to Gregg Erastus and Viola Jean Goates Snow; married Phyllis Squire, four children. She is Laurel adviser; former counselor in stake Primary presidency, counselor in ward Primary presidency, Relief Society teacher, and Cubmaster; received bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University; born in St. George, Utah, to Phil Ervil and Ruth Hafen Squire.

Richard Henry Winkel, 51, Spain Madrid Mission; Arcata Ward, Eureka California Stake; Varsity Scout leader; former stake president, high councilor, bishop, Scoutmaster, and seminary teacher; president and owner of lumber company; received bachelor's degree from BYU and master's degree from Pepperdine University; born in Oakland, Calif., to Francis Benjamin and Rose Blanche Thompson; married Karen Hart, nine children. She is former counselor in Young Women presidency, counselor in Relief Society presidency, Sunday School and Primary teacher; received associate degree from BYU; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Leo Robert and Ruby Moriene King Hart.
