Elder James O. Mason

Family: Born June 19, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to A. Stanton and Neoma Thorup Mason. Married Marie Smith Dec. 29, 1952, in the Salt Lake Temple. Parents of seven children: James S., 40; Sue, 37; Bruce T., 35; Ralph N., 33; Samuel R., 30; Sara, 27; and Ben S., 19 (serving in Australia Perth (Spanish Speaking) Mission.)

Education: Bachelor's and medical degrees from University of Utah; master's and doctorate of public health from Harvard University; internship at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Md.; residency in internal medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical Service.Employment: Assistant secretary for health and head of U.S. Public Health Service in U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1989-93; director of Centers for Disease Control, 1983-89; executive director, Utah Department of Health, 1979-83; associate professor and chairman, Division of Community Medicine, University of Utah School of Medicine, 1978-79; Church commissioner of health services, 1970-75; director, LDS Hospital infectious disease division, 1968-69.

Church Service: Regional representative, stake president, stake president's counselor, bishop; full-time mission in Denmark, 1950-52.
