This week in Church history

A 12-page "miniature edition" of the Church News was being sent to 70,000 Latter-day Saints in the armed services, reported the May 13, 1944, regular issue of the Church News.According to the article: "Inaugurated by the First Presidency in order to keep more closely in touch with the thousands of LDS members serving their country on every battle front, this first issue of the LDS Servicemen's Edition of the Church News will contain inspirational material, vital messages, answers to questions and a summary of important news happenings within the Church."

Questions pertaining to Church doctrine and activities "arising in the minds of those away from home serving their country" were solicited for the new publication, which was to be published monthly and distributed through bishops to all members in the military.

"A need for such a medium for communicating more readily with Church members was indicated by the many reports coming from combat areas which told of long delays, some as much as six months, in receiving the larger Church publications."
