"The Handcart Song," page 220 in the Children's Songbook, was written by John Daniel Thompson McAllister, who himself crossed the plains to Salt Lake City as a young man and then later wrote the song to help the handcart companies that followed to have the courage to walk the long way to the valley. A contemporary verse was written by Lucile Cardon Reading and is part of the version in the Children's Songbook.
