President Brigham Young met in council with several members of the Twelve and others at his home on Aug. 9, 1844, according to History of the Church 7:247. Those present at the gathering included Elders Heber C. Kimball, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, Wilford Woodruff, Willard Richards, George A. Smith, Amasa M. Lyman and 11 others, according to the account."On motion of Elder Heber C. Kimball, Bishop Newel K. Whitney and George Miller were appointed to settle the affairs of the late Trustee-in-Trust, Joseph Smith, and be prepared to enter upon their duties as Trustees of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"The Nauvoo House Committee were instructed to wind up their business and report. . . . "Conversation ensued relative to the affairs and liabilities of the Church and the building of the Nauvoo House."
Much of the subsequent couple of days were spent with the Twelve in meetings and council. Assignments made included sending Elder Wilford Woodruff on a mission to England and to preside over the Church there; and that the continent of America be organized into districts and high priests appointed to preside over each district, with Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball and Willard Richards directing their work.
