How many stakes were in the Church when President Howard W. Hunter was called as a member of the Council of the Twelve in October 1959, and how many of those stakes were outside the United States?
*****Here's answer to week's question
At the time of President Hunter's call in 1959, there were approximately 1.6 million Latter-day Saints in 288 stakes and 50 missions. The largest concentration of membership was in the western United States, and there were only four stakes outside the U.S.: two in Canada and one each in Mexico and New Zealand.
