Temple Square yule lights win tour association nod

The popularity of the Christmas lights on Temple Square in Salt Lake City was recently recognized by the American Bus Association (ABA).

The lights have been included on the 1995 Top 100 Events in North America by the ABA. The lights will be on display next year from Nov. 24, 1995 to Jan. 4, 1996.Officials of ABA and Destinations magazine, the association's travel trade publication, recently made the announcement in awards ceremonies at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Each state in the United States and each province in Canada nominates up to seven events for consideration, then a committee comprised of motorcoach operators and travel industry officials chooses the Top 100. Events selected must appeal to a wide range of audiences. They range from festivals honoring music and heritage to anniversary celebrations and light displays.

The trade association of the intercity motorcoach industry, ABA has conducted the Top 100 program since 1982 to showcase North America's rich diversity and assist tour operators in planning itineraries.

More than 300,000 multi-colored lights brighten Temple Square at the Christmas season in a tradition that will be 29 years old this holiday season. They are first lit during ceremonies the day after Thanksgiving. The display includes a life-size Nativity scene just north of the tabernacle where visitors can see and hear the Christmas story.
