Ground was broken Sept. 8, 1969, for the Ogden Utah Temple, according to the Sept. 13, 1969, issue of the Church News.

The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted on the 96th birthday of Church President David O. McKay, who was unable to attend due to his advanced age. President Hugh B. Brown, first counselor in the First Presidency, presided; President N. Eldon Tanner, second counselor in the First Presidency, conducted."We must think about what we are doing and why," said President Brown. "The work we are doing for the living and the dead is a significant part of the gospel."

He went on to pay tribute to President McKay and his leadership: "We must remember President McKay's far-sighted leadership in making this temple possible. . . . All of us feel the importance and spirit of today's occasion."
