Plans to build two new temples in South America have been announced by the First Presidency.
Sites have been selected for temples in Cochabamba, Bolivia; and Recife, Brazil, according to the First Presidency. Construction will begin once plans are complete and all necessary governmental approvals have been obtained.The new temples will be the Church's 59th and 60th, and the seventh and eighth announced for South America. The two temples are the first to be announced for South America since the Bogota Colombia Temple was announced in 1984.
When completed, the temple in Cochabamba will be the first in Bolivia, and the temple in Recife will be Brazil's second. The Sao Paulo Temple is the other temple in Brazil.
Some 80,000 members of the Church in Bolivia in 22 stakes and districts will be served by the temple in Cochabamba.
The Recife Brazil Temple District will be made up of 102,000 members in 23 stakes and districts in northern Brazil. Brazil has a member population of nearly half a million. The Sao Paulo Temple, dedicated in 1978, serves the more populous southern coastal area of the country.
