President David O. McKay was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery Jan. 22, 1970, following funeral services in the Salt Lake Tabernacle, reported the Jan. 24, 1970, issue of the Church News.
The ninth president of the Church had died Jan. 18 in his apartment of congestive heart failure at age 96.
The body of President McKay had lain in state in the Church Office Building for three days prior to the funeral. "Tens of thousands of Church members lined the sidewalks around the Church Administration block, waiting to file past the body of the man they had known and loved as their religious leader for nearly 19 years," the article said.
President McKay's funeral, attended by thousands, was conducted by President Hugh B. Brown, first counselor to President McKay. Speakers included President Brown, President Joseph Fielding Smith, President N. Eldon Tanner and President Harold B. Lee. Elder Richard L. Evans dedicated the grave.
The day after the funeral, President Joseph Fielding Smith was ordained and set apart as the Church's 10th president. His counselors were Presidents Harold B. Lee and N. Eldon Tanner. President Spencer W. Kimball was the new acting president of the Council of the Twelve.
