Students put cheer in their marriage

Amy Freeze and Gary Arbuckle of the BYU 82nd Ward, Brigham Young University 11th Stake, spent their honeymoon last September in Hawaii. More particularly, they spent part of their honeymoon on the sidelines at Aloha Stadium cheering the BYU Cougar football team on to a 13-12 victory over the University of Hawaii.

Amy and Gary are the first cheerleaders at BYU to perform together as a married couple. The BYU-Hawaii game was their opening act as Mr. and Mrs.They met in 1993 when Amy was a cheerleader and Gary was spending a one-year tenure as the mascot "Cosmo." They became good friends because, for one thing, Gary was about the only person willing to run with Amy when working out. They spent almost every day together, even beyond the several hours a week they were required to spend together in cheering practice, service projects, travel and university promotions.

Friendship shifted to courtship (they spent time together in the Northridge, Calif., earthquake while visiting Gary's family). They were married Aug. 31 in the Provo Temple.

Gary will graduate with a degree in biology this spring and Amy plans to receive her degree in broadcasting this summer.

For now, they are partners on the basketball court, cheering for BYU victories, as well as off.
