Milestones in Pres. Hunter's life

Following are some of the highlights and hallmarks of President Howard W. Hunter's life:

1907 - Born Nov. 14 in Boise, Idaho, the eldest of two children of John William and Nellie Marie Rasmussen Hunter.

1922 - Enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) upon entering Boise High School; was commissioned a major in 1926, the highest ROTC rank at the high school level.

1923 - Received the Eagle Scout award on May 11, the second Scout in Boise, Idaho, to receive the award.

1927 - From January to March, he toured Asia as a musician on the S.S. President Jackson.

1931 - Married Clara May (Claire) Jeffs in the Salt Lake Temple on June 10.

1935 - Entered Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles; received a juris doctorate on June 8, 1939, graduating with honors.

1940 - Admitted to practice law before the California Supreme Court and other courts of the state; admitted to the bar of the U.S. District Court for Southern California on Feb. 5; admitted to the bar of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on April 8.

1940 - Called as bishop of the El Sereno Ward in Los Angeles on Aug. 27; sustained Sept. 1; ordained a week later by Elder Joseph F. Merrill of the Council of the Twelve.

1944 - Elected to the board of the Watson Land Co., a national developer of industrial centers; on Sept. 12, 1994, he was honored at a luncheon in Los Angeles for 50 years of service on the board.

1950 - Sustained as president of the Pasadena California Stake on Feb. 26.

1952 - Called as chairman of the regional council of stake presidents.

1956 - Attended dedication of the Los Angeles Temple on March 11.

1958 - Named to the board of Beneficial Life Insurance Co. in Salt Lake City in February; in 1968 he became chairman of the executive committee, and in 1984 he was elected chairman of the board.

1959 - Called to the Council of the Twelve on Oct. 9 at age 51; sustained Oct. 10 in the Saturday morning session of general conference; ordained Oct. 15 by President David O. McKay.

1959 - Gave the Christmas address on the NBC "Faith in Action" radio program.

1961 - Moved to Salt Lake City in April after completing business matters with his law firm.

1961 - Was appointed chairman of the advisory board for the New World Archaelogical Foundation (NWAF), a professional research organization based at BYU.

1963 - Admitted to the Utah State Bar Jan. 29.

1964 - Named president of the Genealogical Society of Utah on Jan. 21.

1965 - Appointed president and chairman of the board of the Polynesian Cultural Center by the First Presidency on Jan. 13. Awareness of the center increased under his leadership in August 1966 when PCC shows were presented at the Hollywood Bowl in California; portions of the show were taped for "The Ed Sullivan Show" and were seen by millions of television viewers throughout the nation.

1966 - Became honorary member of the Blue Key service organization at BYU in April.

1968 - Received Distinguished Citizen Award from business, industry and church leaders in Southern California on June 22.

1970 - Called as Church Historian and Recorder on Jan. 24.

1975 Created 16 stakes in Mexico in November, setting a record for the number of stakes created at one time by a General Authority. More stakes were created in one weekend than existed in the first 46 years of the restored Church.

1976 - Received honorary doctor of laws degree from BYU on Aug. 13.

1977 - Received another Distinguished Citizen Award in Los Angeles in April. Also the name of Howard Hunter was given by Latter-day Saint law students to their student organization at Southwestern University in Los Angeles in February.

1978 - Received Distinguished Eagle Award presented by the Great Salt Lake Council of the Boy Scouts of America in November.

1979 - Attended dedication of Orson Hyde Memorial Garden in Jerusalem on Oct. 24; Elder Hunter had played a major role in raising funds and in the negotiations leading to the construction of the garden.

1983 - His wife, Claire, died Oct. 9.

1985 - Received honorary doctor of humanities degree from BYU-Hawaii on June 22.

1985 - Set apart as acting president of the Council of the Twelve on Nov. 10.

1988 - Set apart as president of the Council of the Twelve on June 2.

1989 - Offered the dedicatory prayer for the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies - Brigham Young University in May; President Hunter was also the final speaker for the services. He had been instrumental in the establishment of the center.

1989 - The Howard W. Hunter Professorship was established at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU; in 1990, the board of the Watson Land Co. approved a $50,000 donation to be matched by others to the Howard W. Hunter Professorship.

1990 - Married Inis Bernice Egan on April 10 in the Salt Lake Temple.

1990 - Was recognized by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Los Angeles for 50 years of service on Nov. 26.

1993 - Received the 1992-93 Exemplary Manhood Award from the Brigham Young University Student Association in April.

1994 - Set apart and ordained as the 14th president of the Church on June 5; sustained in a solemn assembly at the 164th Semiannual General Conference Oct. 1.

1995 - Died March 3 in his Salt Lake City residence at age 87.
