The Garden City (Kan.) Community College Broncbusters, on the strength of record-setting tailback Tyson Wilson, came from behind to upend Ricks College, 42-35, in the 10th annual Real Dairy Bowl Dec. 7.
Ricks College, 6-4, jumped to a 21-6 lead early in the second quarter of the junior college bowl game, but fell behind to seventh-ranked Garden City in the third. Ricks surged ahead again, 35-28, early in the fourth quarter, but could not maintain the lead.Wilson shattered four Real Dairy Bowl records and scored the final two of his five touchdowns to secure the win for Garden City, which finished 10-2 for the season. The game-winner came on a 1-yard run with 4:24 still in the fourth.
Ricks' first score came early in the game after blocking a Broncbusters' punt. Defensive end Karl Mayall scooped up the ball and ran 22 yards for a touchdown.
The Vikings of Ricks scored again when quarterback Dan Robinson found running back Jacob Garcia on a 17-yard scoring play. The play was set up by a fumble recovery by defensive tackle Pete Beecher.
Robinson also scored on a 5-yard run, and rifled scoring passes to freshman Nathan Rydalch for a 50-yard scoring play, and to Jimmy Atkin for a 25-yard touchdown.
Robinson completed 11 of 31 passes for 182 yards and had one interception. He was sacked six times, however, and the Vikings lost the ball on three fumbles.
Wilson set bowl records for rushing and scoring, and was named Player of the Game. "I'm proud of the kids," said Ricks coach Ron Haun, whose team started the season at 1-3 before winning its next five games and securing the bowl invitation. "A lot of times if you don't have character, you can go the other way. This has been one of the favorite groups I've had."
