On July 21, 1847, Erastus Snow and Orson Pratt rode ahead of the main company of pioneers to explore the valley and find a place to begin planting. They followed Brigham Young's directions to veer north upon entering the valley. However, Erastus Snow dropped his coat along the way and returned to find it. This left Orson Pratt, then the senior apostle, to continue forward and become the first member to stand in the area that is now downtown Salt Lake City.
