Video on history of the Church available: Contains eleven presentations for home, Church use

Eleven inspirational video presentations on Church history and doctrine are now available for Sunday School and home use.

Collected on one videocassette, the Doctrine and Covenants and Church History Video Presentations have been selected from existing Church Educational System audiovisual materials and from other historical sources. The presentations are from five to 10 minutes in length and may be used with the 1997 Gospel Doctrine lessons 2, 6, 8, 11, 13, 20-21, 33-34, 40 and 43.On the back of the video case, teachers are encouraged to "preview the presentations and read the related scriptures carefully. Teachers then can integrate the presentations into their lessons to help class members understand and apply gospel principles. These presentations, which include excerpts from talks given in general conference, can also be used by families in their homes for individual study and family home evening."

The video presentations can increase motivation to study the Doctrine and Covenants and Church history - especially in the case of youth, said Josiah W. Douglas, manager of basic curriculum in the Church's Curriculum Department. "Some of the very foundational doctrinal events of the restoration are depicted in these presentations."

Not only can the video be used in classrooms and for family home evenings, Brother Douglas said, but also as a missionary tool.

Examples of what is offered in the presentations include President Gordon B. Hinckley speaking about the First Vision, with excerpts from the movie "The First Vision;" President Spencer W. Kimball speaking from the Peter Whitmer home in Fayette, N.Y. with video selections illustrating the organization of the Church on April 6, 1830; and President Ezra Taft Benson asking every worthy young man to serve a full-time mission for the Church, with selections from "Called to Serve."

In addition, President Thomas S. Monson speaks about the office of bishop, with selections from "Caring for the Needy;" President Howard W. Hunter challenges all members, including youth, to make the temple "the great symbol of their membership"; and President Gordon B. Hinckley and President James E. Faust speak about the revelation on the priesthood, with selections from "Long Promised Day."

The Doctrine and Covenants and Church History Video Presentations can be ordered from local distribution centers for $5.
