A pioneer handcart trek, from July 9-12, involving youth of the Monument Park Stake, ended with a celebration at Deseret Village in This Is the Place State Park on Salt Lake City's east bench. The youth were greeted by more than 1,400 stake members along the streets of the replica pioneer village.
Elder M. Russell Ballard, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve and chairman of the Church Sesquicentennial committee, was the keynote speaker at a program for the youth. The group then enjoyed dinner. The stake had previously assisted with the building of the Anderson home, a brick four-room home in the village that depicts the influence of the Scandinavian culture of the pioneers. Projects were distributed to each ward in the stake to complete.
