Living by the scriptures

Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail. -- D&C 6:34.

As I have studied the scriptures over the years and particularly enjoyed the stories of Jesus Christ ministering to the Saints of His day in Palestine and the Americas, I have frequently pondered what it must have been like to witness His presence and converse with Him personally. In my pondering, I've wondered if those people knew how lucky they were to live when He lived, and to be close enough to Him to touch his clothing and feel of His mercy, to have their children blessed by Him and hear His voice.

Then one day I was reading in the Doctrine and Covenants and came across Christ's reassurance to the newly gathered members in Harmony, N.Y. The impact of that scripture is profound, but for me its strength comes not as much from its reassuring words as from Christ's tender personal address to that little group of Saints: "Fear not little flock."

Even 10 million strong, we are still His little flock. That gives me comfort. It also gives me the literal sense that it was His voice the Saints of His time enjoyed.

When I am reading the scriptures in the quiet of my room, my spirit in tune with His, I can hear Him say those words: "Fear not little flock," and I know He is speaking to me. As I continue to read, I hear the sound of His voice in everything He says, and I recognize that He does speak to us personally just as He did to the Saints of ancient times. All we have to do to hear Him is pick up the scriptures and read. -- Dorothy W. Peterson, Fullerton, Calif.
