New temple president

Elder J. Richard Clarke, 71, Emeritus General Authority, has been called as president of the Hawaii Temple, succeeding Pres. T. David Hannemann. Elder Clarke's wife, Barbara Jean Reed Clarke, will serve as temple matron.

Elder Clarke was called as a General Authority in October 1976, where he served as second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric until April 1985, when he was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy. He served in the First Quorum until 1997, when he was granted emeritus status. He served as president of the South Africa Cape Town Mission from 1985-87 and in the Presidency of the Seventy from 1988-93. Before being called as a General Authority, he was a regional representative, stake president and stake president's counselor.A life insurance agency manager, he received a bachelor's degree from BYU and did graduate work at Stanford University. He was born in Rexburg, Idaho, to John R. and Nora L. Redford Clarke.

Sister Clarke has served in ward and stake Young Women presidencies, as ward and stake Relief Society president, and accompanied her husband on his many Church assignments, including mission president. She was born in Ririe, Idaho, to James Henry and Maud Dalley Armstrong Reed.
