Mormon Pioneer Memorial Bridge

Of several places where the Mormon Pioneers crossed the Missouri River, only one has been designated with an official marker. At the crossing today, Interstate 680 traverses the river from a point near Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Florence, Neb., (site of former Winter Quarters) over the Mormon Pioneer Memorial Bridge.

The bridge was dedicated June 1, 1953. On that occasion, the Utah Pioneer Trails and Landmarks Association placed a marker on the Nebraska side of the river. It is just south of the entrance to the bridge's eastbound lane. The marker notes that a ferry was operated at the site when the Saints were at Winter Quarters.
