Concert to mark retirement of choir's director

Jerold Ottley is retiring after having served 24 years as director of the Tabernacle Choir. Sunday, Oct. 17, will be the last time he takes the podium as director of the weekly network broadcast of "Music and the Spoken Word."

After the broadcast, Brother Ottley will direct the choir in a brief concert of mostly sacred music. The concert will feature soloist JoAnn Ottley, who is retiring as the Tabernacle Choir's voice coach.

Former members of the choir have been invited to attend the broadcast and concert, which is open to the public. Members of the audience should be in the Tabernacle no later than 9:15 a.m. for the broadcast.

Brother and Sister Ottley will continue to serve the Church's musical interests as they fill advisory positions with the newly organized Temple Square Chorale and Training School, which was formed when the Church reorganized the musical performing groups that serve on Temple Square.

The chorale and training school is under direction of Mack Wilberg, an associate director of the Tabernacle Choir. Its first concert will be held in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m.

A concert by the Tabernacle Choir, Temple Square Chorale and new Orchestra at Temple Square will be performed Oct. 29 in the Tabernacle at 7:30 p.m. It will be under the direction of Barlow Bradford, conductor of the Orchestra at Temple Square and an associate director of the Tabernacle Choir.

Admission to the concert after the broadcast on Oct. 17 and the performances on Oct. 16 and Oct. 29 is free. No tickets will be distributed; seating will be on a first-come basis.
