President Gordon B. Hinckley

President of the LDS Church

The curtains are closing on this notable century.

In one respect, it has been a shameful period in world history. A time of unprecedented war, conflict and trouble.

A time when the adversary has brought his evil influence of destruction upon millions: Witness what is going on in Yugoslavia.

"The Father of us all must weep as he looks down upon his quarrelsome children."

But in a large sense, this has been the best of all centuries. An age of science, enlightenment, miracles of medicine and diversity.

"All of this has opened new opportunities for us which we must grasp and use for the advancement of the Lord's work."

Church members can be a little kinder, more generous and thoughtful of one another. Avoid arrogance. Reach out to all in helpfulness.

Work to strengthen families. Show children love, but don't spoil them. Read scriptures together.

"Let us be a people of honesty and integrity, doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances."

The church plans to rebuild the Nauvoo Temple.
