The Bountiful Tabernacle

The Bountiful Tabernacle, a stately white building located on a picturesque block of landscaping on Main Street in downtown Bountiful, Utah, is the oldest building in the Church still in use. Ground was broken in February 1857. Using materials of the area, builders formed adobe bricks out of clay and straw to form the walls and hauled lumber from the mountains east of the city for the roof.

Construction was slow, however, since most settlers were occupied with building their own homes. But in March 1863, about 5 1/2 years before the completion of the Salt Lake Tabernacle, President Brigham Young conducted the dedicatory meeting.

Now 136 years old, the chapel is basically the same as it was originally, with the addition of classrooms and cultural hall in 1977.
