Martin Harris home
Outside Palmyra, N.Y., stands a stately, two-story rock home that was built by Martin Harris, one of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon. Harris was a well-to-do farmer who had inherited 320 acres of land in 1813 at age 30. His farm prospered and he often hired help. In 1827, he hired Joseph Smith Sr. and his sons to work on the farm. One of the sons was Joseph Smith Jr., who was paid 50 cents a day. Martin Harris believed the account of the Book of Mormon, and was one of its scribes. He later mortgaged his farm to pay for the printing of the Book of Mormon. The Martin Harris home is located about 51/2 miles north of Hill Cumorah on Highway 21, in an area rich in Church history sites.
