Ivan J. Barrett, 89, a professor at BYU for 42 years and lifelong scholar of the Prophet Joseph Smith, died Aug. 16, 1999, in Orem, Utah. The author of the oft-used textbook, Joseph Smith and the Restoration, he also wrote biographies on other Church leaders, and was a popular speaker. He served as president of the Northwestern States Mission from 1964-67, and was special Church representative in Israel, stake president, patriarch, temple sealer and bishop.
He also started the first LDS seminary in Nevada, and received many awards for his teaching at BYU.
Daniel Albert Keeler, 75, member of the Sunday School General Board from 1956-63, died Aug. 4, 1999, in Bountiful, Utah. He served on the Church's General Curriculum Correlation Committee. He was employed by KSL Radio and Television and was known as "Marshal Dan," on a children's program in the early 1950s. His voice was widely used for many Church films, recordings and pageants, including the "Mormon Miracle" pageant in Manti, Utah, and the Hill Cumorah Pageant in Palmyra, N.Y.
