Spotlight on historic sites

Independence Visitors Center

Located at 937 W. Walnut in Independence, Mo., on part of the 63.43-acre site dedicated for a temple by the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1831, the Independence Visitors Center is both a visitors center and historical site. The imposing building includes four theaters and a resource room with exhibits about basic Church concepts. On the lower level is a museum of Church history that features the Mormon experience in Missouri. The displays include a multi-media theater that presents the story of the LDS settlements of the 1800s. Artifacts dating back to the 1830s are on display, and other historical items have been re-created so visitors can have a first-hand look at how families lived on the Missouri frontier. About 70,000 visitors are expected by year's end.
