To avoid contact with travelers on the heavily-used Oregon Trail, Brigham Young and the Latter-day Saints in 1847 chose to follow the north bank instead of the south bank of the Platte River in Nebraska. Today, the Mormon Trail State Wayside Area in Nebraska commemorates the Mormon Pioneer Trail. A Nebraska State historical marker tells the story in this small park on the south side of U.S. 30, nine miles east of Central City.
