Spotlight on hitoric sites: Auburn's Old Rock Church

In pristine Star Valley, Wyo., is the small town of Auburn, seven miles northwest of Afton. At the community park there is Auburn's "Old Rock Church," an LDS chapel built in 1889 that now belongs to the Star Valley Historical Society. Early Mormon settlers built the church in the middle of a cold Wyoming winter from limestone quarried out of a nearby canyon. At the time, the 30-foot-by-50-foot building was the largest in the valley. In 1986, the building was accepted by the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the old church is used for community theater, with proceeds going for the upkeep of the edifice.

The Auburn rock church can be found by driving to Afton on Highway 89, and then taking Fifth Avenue (Highway 238) seven miles to Auburn.
