Two monuments in Samoa — one at the Malaeimi stake center on Tutuila in American Samoa and one at a stake center near Pesega on Upolu in Western Samoa — commemorate the arrival in 1888 of a missionary couple to the Pacific island. Elder Joseph H. Dean and his wife, Florence, landed on the island in a longboat, marking the official beginning of the Church in Samoa.
The monuments were dedicated in June 1988 as part of Samoa's centennial celebrations. Participants placed their written testimonies of the gospel in time capsules that were sealed inside the monuments.
