Dean D. Baxter, 72, president of the New Zealand Christchurch Mission from 1985-1988, died Sept. 27, 2001, in Salt Lake City. During the Korean War, Brother Baxter was assistant chief chaplain in Vienna, Austria, and was instrumental in getting the Church recognized in Austria.
S. Reed Dayton, 93, president of the Nevada Las Vegas Mission from 1978-1981, died Oct. 3, 2001, in Salt Lake City. Brother Dayton was also a stake patriarch.
Jonathan W. Snow, 89, president of the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission from 1980-1983, died Oct. 5, 2001, in Huntington Woods, Mich. Brother Snow was also a stake patriarch.
John E. Talmage, 90, a former editor of the Church News and a son of Elder James E. Talmage, died Oct. 4, 2001, in Salt Lake City. Brother Talmage, who was also a former managing editor for the Deseret News, which owns the Church News, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and wrote the manual for reciprocal aid between the Allies.
