Elder George R. Hill III, a former Seventy, dies

Elder George R. Hill III, a former Seventy and longtime Church leader, died Sunday, April 22, following a battle with cancer. He was 79.

Elder Hill was born in Ogden, Utah, Nov. 24, 1921 to George R. Hill, Jr. and Elizabeth McKay Hill. He was sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy on April, 4, 1987, and was among those sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy when it was created in 1989. He was released on Oct. 3, 1992. During his tenure as a General Authority, Elder Hill served in area presidencies in the Philippines-Micronesia Guam Area and in the Utah South Area. He also served as a regional representative, a counselor in two General YMMIA superintendencies and as a bishop in several Utah wards.

A champion of the sciences, Elder Hill served as Dean of the College of Mines and Mineral Industry at the University of Utah, director of the Office of Coal Research in the United States Department of Interior and in many other professional capacities.

Elder Hill is survived by his wife, Melba, seven children, 32 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
