While the Mormon Handcart Visitors Center is quite accessible, it is about an hour's drive from Interstate 80. To get there from the east or west on I-80, exit at Rawlins and go north on U.S. Highway 287. It is 44 miles north from Rawlins to Muddy Gap junction. Turn right at the junction onto State Highway 220 for approximately 10 more miles to the well-signed turnoff to the visitors center which is just north of the highway.
It is convenient to two other prominent Mormon Trail sites. Devil's Gate is adjacent to the Church property and Independence Rock is about five miles further east. It is best to plan on a full day to experience everything in the Martin's Cove area.
There are water and restrooms at the center, and places for picnics, but no other services. Camping can be scheduled nearby, but for other lodging, food and fuel, Rawlins and Casper are the nearest cities. Each is about an hour's drive away.
For an alternate route that parallels the Mormon Trail in some places, exit I-80 at Rock Springs and take U.S. 191 north 40 miles to Farson. Then turn right on State Route 28 for 68 miles and, at the junction, turn right onto U.S. 287 to Muddy Gap Junction.
The roads to Rocky Ridge and the Rock Creek are difficult to find. They are not paved or signed. Check with the Mormon Handcart Visitors Center for directions and advice. For further information the visitors center is part of the official Church website www.lds.org under "Family Resources," "Places to Visit."
