Elder Loren C. Dunn, president of the Boston Massachusetts Temple and an emeritus General Authority, died May 16 of complications incident to surgery. He was 70.
A former business executive and newspaper editor, Elder Dunn served in full-time Church callings for more than 32 years.
Elder Dunn was born June 12, 1930, in Tooele, Utah, to Alex F. and Carol Horsfall Dunn.
A fine athlete, Elder Dunn played center for BYU, helping the basketball squad claim the National Invitation Tournament title in 1951. He graduated from BYU in 1953 with degrees in journalism and economics. He then served a full-time mission to Australia followed by a two-year tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Germany. He later earned a master's degree in public relations from Boston University.
Elder Dunn was called as a member of the First Council of the Seventy on April, 6, 1968, at age 37. He was later sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy.
Elder Dunn's talents were enlisted in a variety of capacities. He served as president of the North America East Area, executive director of the Church's historical department and as assistant executive director of the Correlation Department. He also served as executive director of the Missionary Department of the Church and president of Nauvoo Restoration Inc.
He also served as an executive administrator or area presidency member for the Church throughout the United States, Canada and other areas of the world. Elder Dunn also presided over the Australia Sydney Mission.
Elder Dunn and his wife, the former Sharon Longden, were called to serve as president and matron of the Boston Massachusetts Temple last June. He was named emeritus General Authority on Oct. 7, 2000.
Prior to his call as a Church leader, Elder Dunn was recognized for his work in regional economic planning and development and was director of communications for the New England Council for Economic Development in Boston, Mass.
He is survived by his wife and five children.
