Commemorating a 'lifetime legacy' on Butler Hill

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Terisa Teerlink wanted her children to learn some of the history of the Church in the area they live. She wanted them to know what life was like when the Butler 1st Ward was formed in 1901.

So during the ward's centennial anniversary, Sister Teerlink and other members of the Butler 1st, 8th and 12th wards, Salt Lake Butler Stake, participated May 12 in "A Lifetime Legacy" presentation. After riding in a horse-drawn carriage, members saw log sawing, hand plowing and log splitting demonstrations.

"I think it would help give them a great appreciation of what people had to do to survive 100 years ago," said Robert Cutler, who coordinated the activities. "We tried to set it up so it is a situation to show how people lived 100 years ago on Butler Hill."

That evening, members participated in a centennial celebration at the Butler meetinghouse. Bishop J. Thomas Fyans offered a keynote address. Members also watched a theatrical sketch — "Deary, Do you Remember," depicting 10 decades of history — and viewed antiques and historical displays.
