Following is the transcript of the benediction delivered by President Gordon B. Hinckley Sept. 14 at the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance service in the Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City.
Almighty God, Thou great judge of the nations. We have paid homage in our weak way to the very many of this and other lands whose lives were lost in this mean and infamous attack. Comfort their loved ones with the certainty of the resurrection made possible by the gift of Thy Beloved Son, who said in His own dark and solemn hour, "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. . . .
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:1, 27).
By the power of Thy Holy Spirit let those who mourn know that mortal life is not the end, but that the immortality of the human soul is certain, that the resurrection through the Atonement of Christ is promised all.
Touch by Thy healing hand, those who have been wounded in body and mind, and make them well.
Now, dear Father, we love this our native land, "one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all." Preserve it, strengthen it that it may be forever "the home of the brave and the land of the free."
We bow before Thee in humility at this time of great sorrow. May the events of last Tuesday ever be a reminder of great evil in the world. Make us ever vigilant to detect it and fearless to oppose it.
We so pray, in the sacred name of our Redeemer, even the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
