Nauvoo baptismal records available

PROVO, Utah — The Center for Family History and Genealogy at BYU announced Oct. 21 the publication of "Annotated Record of Baptisms for the Dead 1840-1845, Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois" by Susan Easton Black and Harvey Bischoff Black.

This seven-volume set illuminates the work of the early Latter-day Saints in behalf of their deceased loved ones and includes more than 60,000 names.

Many people received sacred ordinances in the Nauvoo Temple and for years their ordinance work was accessible only on holographic records. Now, the faded holographic baptismal records have been extracted, edited and alphabetized. Vital statistics now identify most proxies and the relationship between the proxies and the deceased.

"Record of Baptisms for the Dead" is the largest print project ever attempted by the Brigham Young University Press.
