Church donates books to Ghana

TEMA, Ghana — Latter-day Saint Charities, a distribution arm of the Church's' Humanitarian Service, presented 12 ship containers of educational books to Ghana's Minister of Education Nov. 15 in Tema, Ghana, according to the Accra Daily Mail newspaper.

"Through education our country gets ahead," said the education minister, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, in receiving the books at the warehouse of Latter-day Saint Charities here. "Many have and will benefit by your humanitarian aid."

The Accra Daily Mail reported that Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi also thanked Latter-day Saint Charities for their good works. The thousands of books received for distribution throughout the districts of Ghana are valued at $95,000.

Representing Latter-day Saint Charities in presenting the books was Dr. E.R.K. Dwemoh. He was accompanied by Elder Neil Darlington, director of Latter-day Saint Charities in Ghana. Elder Darlington welcomed the group to the warehouse and said that "the real value of a book is worthless if not read, but becomes priceless when parents, children and teachers read and study to gain wisdom."

Dr. Dwemoh added: "This is a Church of action. Knowledge is power and through studying books most of us have changed attitudes."

Also present were Michael Boateng and Johnny Aukrah, who represented Cecilia Bannerman, Minister of Manpower Development and Employment.

"The teachers will benefit because we have not been privileged enough to have technical books," said Mr. Boateng. "We will make very good use of them."

The group toured the warehouse while Clarence B. Kofi, warehouse manager, explained how Latter-day Saint Charities operates. At the same time, 15 full-time missionaries prepared the books for distribution.

The Accra Daily Mail article concluded: "The Church teaches their members to follow the example of Jesus Christ and serve their fellowmen. Because the Church has no salaried ministry, they are able to help throughout the world."
