Members help 'Lift Up' 9/11 memorial

MANDEVILLE, La. — Members of the Covington Ward, Slidell Louisiana Stake, gathered with the community for a Sept. 11 memorial service and patriotic salute to all branches of the United States military.

The service, entitled "Lift Up America," was held on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain in Mandeville. Admission was free, although those attending were asked to bring food for the Samaritan Center of Mandeville and the Covington Food Bank.

The memorial service was planned and organized by the recently formed community group, "Leaders Inspiring Faith Today by Uniting People." Future activities for the group include house repairs for the needy, and food and clothing distribution.

Co-founder Dennis Burke of the Covington Ward said the Sept. 11 service was actually a by-product of the group's larger efforts. "Rather than focusing on our religious differences, LIFTUP was formed to unite our community in shared values — morals, community and family values," he said.

The Sept. 11 interfaith services included participation from more than 14 area churches and synagogues. David Collins, second counselor in the bishopric of the Covington Ward, addressed the topic, "Children of God." The memorial portion of the service, attended by more than 5,000, ended with the playing of "Taps."

"The relationships which were formed with leaders of other churches during this process will continue to strengthen morals and values in our community for years to come," said Brother Burke.
