President David O. McKay dedicated 22 buildings on the BYU campus on May 26, 1954, according to the May 29, 1954, Church News.
An article stated: "The lives of 40 prominent educators and Church people, past and present, were commemorated at Brigham Young University Wednesday in the dedication and naming of 22 buildings and 13 parts of buildings."
It continued: "First tribute of the day was paid to President George Albert Smith . . . whose name was given to the great new BYU fieldhouse in which the services were being held."
The new physical sciences building was named for Dr. Carl F. Eyring who "played a major role in the design and construction" of the building.
Also dedicated were 16 group-living apartments known as Heritage Halls. All were named for important women in the Church such as Mary Fielding Smith and Eliza R. Snow.
The others buildings dedicated were the Herald R. Clark Student Services Center and three student dormitory buildings.
Parts of the new science building such as laboratories and lecture halls were named for distinguished scientists.
