BYU-Hawaii: 50 years and counting

Jubilee celebrations include re-enactments, devotionals, concerts

BYU-Hawaii alumni, faculty, staff and students in Laie celebrated the jubilee of BYU-Hawaii in a big way Oct. 15-23. Among myriad events commemorating what was once called the Church College of Hawaii, founded in 1955, were a Gladys Knight concert (Oct. 15); devotional with BYU-Hawaii President Eric B. Shumway (Oct. 18); an Evening with the Governor, during which Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle spoke (Oct. 19); a re-enactment of the 1921 flag-raising ceremony that led to then-Elder David O. McKay's vision of a future university in the community (Oct. 20); a devotional with President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency, and Presidential Luncheon during which Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann addressed guests (Oct. 21); and a multi-stake conference during which President Monson, along with Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve and Bishop Keith B. McMullin of the Presiding Bishopric, delivered addresses.
